If you do a experiment in comparing the change of mass of material to it's volume in ml..... You will get a results of a graph which show it's both directly proportional.... no matter what material....

The density definition is correct. 1 ml of water at 4 deg C weights one gram.

it depends on the substance being measured because ml is a unit of volume and gram is a unit of weight
