I drive a 2000 Chevy Cavalier. It has an automatic transmission. Lately, the engine has been sputtering when I drive it and sometimes at stop lights or even when idling, it stalls. Now the check engine light is on. What could possibly be wrong? Thanks for your answers.

Too many possibilities to answer without knowing the cause of the check engine light. But a 2000 model probably needs plugs, wires, oxygen sensors, fuel filter and a true fuel system cleaning.
The check engine light gives a code that would represent a particular emission system control that would lead you in the right direction, but a full tune up would help.

if the check engine light is on the autozone will test it for free so go there or any garage will do a check for free with a code reader and then a free estimate for the repairs its common to pay a garage to run the code reader for a hundred dollars so see if they can do one and estimate the job get several prices and ask around or check the local better business about the repair shops

Could be the spark plug wire set. Read the following question and answer and compare it to your situation.
