a. The express counter (longer lines, but everyone has 12 items or less)
b. The regular counter (shorter lines, but everyone has a lot of stuff in their carts)

I'm always torn between the two, and I would like to know if anyone out here has experiences that can answer the question.

Size up the total amount of groceries in both lines.
The lesser amount will be fster usually but not always.
Some people move very slowly. Especially the elderly and often times extremely obese people.

Young men usually move more quickly and so do young women if they don't have children with them.

Look for those factors. It should help.

Depends. If there are three or less carts in line, than the regular counter is shorter. If there are more, then the 12 items or less is shorter.

Because let's face it, not everyone has 12 items, or counts. Sometimes it's 13 or 15, and sometimes there's a cash vs card issue.

express because you have less items to put in your cart after checkout, (less time to bag and ask if you would like your milk, coke, etc in a bag) and also less time to swipe, also shorter amount of items=more space on the conveyer belt , which means less time unloading baskets or carts. overall--express is faster, unless you have a very lethargic cashier.

this answer if very mumble jumbled. sorry.

Perhaps decide that it doesn't matter and be happy you have money to spend at the store.
