well, it depends on what era of glam rock you are refering to. If you are talking about the orginal movement from the early 1970's, then you're talking about bands like The New York Dolls, T Rex, Slade, The Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Gary Glitter, Mudd, and most of all, David Bowie.
The sound could be anywhere from ultra-bombastic (Slade) to impish folk (T Rex). For me, the Dolls are the banner carriers - totally over the top in every way, and the music was equal to the visual - good and trashy.

If you're talking about the hair metal "glam" craze of the 1980's with bands like Poison, I can't really help you out there since I was not, nor will I ever be a fan of that genre.

I will say there were a few good post-glam bands in the early part of the 1980's, most importantly the Finish band, Hanoi Rocks.

there is really no way to explain it - you have to see it and witness the spectacle. There are several DVD's out that do a good job of nailing the era, along with Velvet Goldmine, which wasn't all that great, but it did have a KILLER soundtrack. Placebo's version of T Rex's "20th Century Boy" is worth the purchase price alone.

T-Rex , Bowie, New York Dolls (but actually they were more "Glam-Gutter-Trash" rock, but that stuff will give you a reference to how it all started. Later in the 80's you had bands that just tried to look "fem" while playing louder heavier stuff.

Glamrock is from the 1970's. T-rex is one of the most popular. Also david bowie was glamrock with his Ziggy stardust. It is rock and roll with a dramitic flair. See awful movie Velvet goldmine to become instantly sick of this genre. Or see hedwig and the angry inch, which is hysterical.
