I kicked my abusive alcoholic husband out of the family 3 years ago for cheating, drunkeness and forcing us into bankruptcy. He has been in hiding ever since. I had a phone call from someone claiming to know him and she said he is dying of cancer and has 1 year to live? I am supporting my 2 kids and myself on a modest income and can't afford a lawyer.

if you are still married to him, they can come after you; you need to get a lawyer; you can usually find one for people with modest incomes, start making calls.

I would tell whoever called you that he is not your problem and let it go. If this is really the truth you will find out about it soon enough. You are NOT responsible for his debts!!! Do not let anyone tell you differently. I think you should go to legal aide and at least file for a legal separation but I don't think I would file for divorce because you will be entitled to social security benefits for you and the children upon his death. I know that sounds harsh, but it is reality. Sounds like you have finally got your life back on track, now keep it that way and to heck with everyone else. Right now all that matters is taking care of your children and yourself. Good luck and I wish you and the children the very best.

I agree with abc you need to find representation of some sort. Yes you are in most states responsible for his medical bills. I would suggest starting with legal aid. most county's and or states have some form of "subsidized" legal help. Your online it should not be to hard to find. Or post another question asking for that info dont forget the state you live in.

contact your local legal aide society. it is a free service and they can answer your questions and help you with the necessary paperwork. you might be able to file for divorce on the grounds of abandonment but i am not sure because you asked him to leave.. good luck

no you are not responsible for his debts even if you live together, although joint assets may be sold.

Assuming you own nothing jointly , not your problem
