How would I go about organizing a fundraiser? I have a place in my community to hold it at. I plan to go around to the surrounding area to ask for donations for raffles. We have limited money (basically none) so we can't really offer any. But I would really like to get someone 'well-known' to help draw in the crowd. How would I go about doing that? Any other suggestions to help make this event a success would be great. Thanks in advance.

One of the first thing you need to do is find out what kind of fund raising activities are legal where you live.

There are links to the laws about raffles in most states here

If I were organizing a fundraiser I would probably spend a fair amount of time going through the information at

for ideas.

It depends on what organization your doing the fundraiser for. It helps that the fundraiser event ties into your organzation. There are several types of fundraisers you can do depending on how much money or donations you get. You could have a spagetti dinner (charge for the meal) and ask popular local artists to perform at the event. You could have a silent auction and have local companies donate the prizes for that auction (ex: movie tickets, gift baskets, gift certificates, concert tickets). You could do a car wash and call local radio stations to help draw in the crowd. There are so nany things you can do but the key is to get organized, have a written plan of what you are going to do and get all the help you can. my husband does a fundraiser every year for childrens miracle network thru his job. he does a golf outing. basically, everyone pays to play golf and have dinner, and pay a little extra that goes to the charity. as far as raffle prizes go, contact some local sports teams from your area...most of them are decent about giving to charities. also, go door to door at local businesses and ask for donations of prizes or money. you will get told "no" alot, but eventually ppl give.

for the raffle prizes, have ppl pay a dollar a ticket and have them write their name on a piece of paper and put it in a container for EACH prize...not a collective one. that way, they can choose what they would like to try to win. you could also do a 50/50 drawing...where ppl donate money, and the prize is half of the money collected. the other half goes to the charity. good luck!

Gather your peeps. Have a brainstorming session. Gather things like homemade blankets, foodstuffs, and tickets for donations from local comapies that are lucky enough to have you ask them for them. Resturants, movie theaters, just go and ask and they'll give you something. It's a tax write off for them. Just make up some receipts to say that they donated to you.
