I know many others have asked this question, and a lot of the answers sort of confirm my suspicions about it being the RAM, but i'd still like to get different opinions on it.

When I first built my computer it would turn on for a few seconds, and then shut off. I tried a few different things including buying a new power supply. It turned out to be that my RAM had been plugged into the wrong socket, (was on the left, needed to be in the center). Problem solved, right?

Wrong. Shortly after, it started to do the same thing, except it didn't shut off like before, but actually turned itself on after I had shut it off. This continued for about 1.5 years, and now to my current problem.

The computer shuts off now when I try to run certain programs, or turn off others (i.e. run updates in AVG antivirus or turn off Folding@home). Most of the time it just shuts off randomly. I think the problem has to do with RAM because the CPU isn't overheating, and because RAM was my first problem. Thanks.

O.K. Did you run Memtest 86+ on the memory? You may have a stick of bad memory. Did you also run Windows Defender?
Which programs cause it to shutdown? You may want to remove those programs and re-install them. Those programs could have corrupt files. Another possibility is a short in the power switch or dirty contacts in the power switch Contact cleaner from Radio Shack will take care of that..

Make sure you are using RAM thats compatible with your mobo. Could also be that you have program conflicts, but that wont boot your pc when it's already off.

Only thing i could think of is, the programs you're running in background are conflicting, power supply problems, RAM issue or Trojan, Remote access/hacker trouble.

How much RAM did you put in that thing ? I take it you put at least 128MB to run XP in a decent way! Could very well have non compatible RAM, mismatched or unpaired RAM.
