First off, welcome back! Second, I would ask your PT what he/she recommends you start back with. If you've been given the okay to return to "full activity" then get in the pool and see what you CAN do. Start small. Give each stroke a 50 or 100 just to see what feels good and what doesn't and what you feel you might need work on.

As a swimmer you know you're not going to set the world on fire the moment you step back in the pool but you also know that a little work can go a LONG way! Build up your endurance again by doing medium intensity main sets or distance. Save the speed work for after you've bene back a few weeks and your "new" body has adjusted to the workouts. Make SURE you warm up and stretch properly no matter how much it sucks or how "boring" warmups are. I know, I've been there!

In another situation I would say ask your coach for suggestions but since your coach got you in this predicament in the first place perhaps that's not the best idea. However, it never hurts to ask as long as you know your limits!

As for dry land, I am sure your doc/PT gave you some shoudler stretches and strengthening exercises, ensure that you do these whether you are swimming or not. I have my shoulder surgery in 2001 and I STILL have to maintain the strength in the shoulder with free weights in order to avoid pain and fatigue. I had surgery on my knee (ruptured ACL) in 1996 and have very little problem with that so I hope your knee healed as well as mine. I also severed my Achilles tendon in 1998 and was out of everything for a LONG time after that and have managed to come back fine.

And finally, I too was a butterflier! The shoulder injury ended my high school swimming and cost me a college shcolarship. It took about a year for me to be back to flying without any pain but I will admit I get numbness and have lost a lot of power. I still love butterfly though and you are VERY lucky to still be able to swim it! Enjoy it, you are young and will come back quickly.

Good luck!

I feel your pain! I have had trouble with both, i would say take it easy and if you are hurting at all...ice it and don't over work yourself...it is not your coaches body it is yours and you need to take care of it...your only 14 and you need some time to recover...you probably have a great couple of years to look forward to so don't ruin it by hurting yourself any more! good luck!

umm do what you did before, just not as hard. maybe swim all days of the week with easier workouts and gradually work your self up (if you aren't already swimming every day). good luck!
