I just read Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill (who is Stephen King's son). It's very suspenseful with a supernatural twist. It's about an aging rock star who buys a ghost on the internet--the ghost turns out to have a very personal revenge agenda and the rest of the book concerns the main character and his girlfriend trying to outrun and defeat the ghost. I liked it for both the suspense and the fact that the characters grew a lot over the course of the book. I could not put it down and read it in one day. Definitely recommend it!

Pick up something by Dick Francis. The Danger, or To the Hilt, or Bolt, Or Odds Against. Pick one. Most start pretty fast. Louis L'Amour is always good for a fast read. My favorite book is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It's not really a murder mystery, but it's not some sappy romance either, despite the title.
Happy reading.

I would suggest you find some James Patterson books - particularly any of the Alex Cross series...it'd be best for you to start at the beginning with Along Came a Spider (at least I think it was the first...I started off out of order, but now get them as soon as they come out). The chapters are short, making it easier to get through. I sometimes get to the point with his books, that I just don't put them down until I'm done.

There must be thousands of books in the category you describe, but one a couple generations have found very engaging comes to mind. It is entitled, "Rebecca," authored by a prolific British novelist of the mid-twentieth century named Daphne du Maurier. A couple movies were made from the screen play including the early one with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Very entertaining mystery.

How about some non-fiction? It's entertaining, informative and even though you know the killer before you start the book- you won't be disappointed, just a little smarter! The book is "Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer (author: James Swanson)" about John Wilkes Booth et al. If you think you know what happened- wait until you read this. I couldn't believe how fascinating it was and it reads like fiction!

Have you tried the Archie McNally books? It's a pretty decent string of books began by Lawrence Sanders and after his death picked up by Vincent Lardo. Every one of them (that I have read so far) have been good and for the most part you won't necessarily have to start with book one and read them in order. If you're not sure if you like Lawrence Sanders I'd suggest you start with McNally's chance to find out if you'd be into his style of writing.

I agree with Sunidaze. James Patterson is a kickin' author. He's just great. Alex Cross is a spectacular series, any of them. Kiss the Girls is another good one. Along Came A Spider and Kiss the Girls were both made into movies, and Morgan Freeman played Alex Cross.

All of Dan Brown's novels start with a bang. Most specifically, Angels and Demons, and The Da Vinci Code.
