I will first list what they shouldn't have done then I'll list some things they could have done.
What they shouldn't have done:
1. Not commit Genocide
2. Not commit Cultural Genocide
3. Not create boarding schools and Kidnap Native children
4. Not pay for Native scalps
5. Not introduce alcohol to Natives
6. Not introduce smallpox to Natives
7. Not commit land theft
8. Not create war against Natives
9. Not create Indian Removal Act and Assimiliation policies
10. Not Rape and Torture Natives
(that's just the top 10 I could think of)
What they could have done:
1. Tried to understand Native culture
2. Upheld treaties
3. Negotiated government to government with Native people
4. Agree to live with each other and learn from each other
5. Apply equal standards to Native people
(and all of the first list)
I'm A Native Woman. Hope this helps!

Not move west.
Seriously. There's no way you can move a large group of foreign settlers into another people's land and expect there not to be serious conflict. The only way for the settlements to be successful was to place them in the best land, which meant removing Native Americans (living together was not a serious option), which meant war. The only solution would have been simply to leave the natives in peace and find another place to settle.
