by his actions. A happy betta fish is active swiming arround and exploring his tank. Happy betta fish do all kinds of unexpected things, like sleeping on plant leaves and will follow your finger when you drag it on the glass. A depressed betta is not active and may act aggressive towards you. To have a happy betta friend you should give him a place to hide, pvc tubing works great. Also bettas love to be in large tanks because they can swim arround and explore. Bettas get lonley too, so some non-betta friends would be great, try to choose fishes that don't have very elaborate fins becasue bettas get confused.

When he swims a lot its happy or excited,if it stays at the bottom for a while it is mad, sad, sleeping,or thinking, when he or she blows bubbles it is ready to mate, and if you had the fish for a while and it doesn't swim a lot at all and is not active it is sick, ill, or dieing.

It's fins will wilt. Such as not be pretty and fluent, they will just hang when he is sick. Other than being sick I guess if there up and flowing they are healthy and happy.
