It is not good that someone with a cold including a mother be around a newborn. They are so small and immune systems are so new that they have the risk of getting anything at that time. But since you are mom, there really isnt anything that you can do.

They shouldn't be, colds are very contagious and a cold can be deadly for a newborn. I had a cold when I had my baby and the doctors and nurses at the hospital wouldn't let me anywhere near him until I was over the cold, I wasn't even allowed to feed him. It was the hardest couple of days in my life, it was hard enough having a premmie in the Special Care Nursery, but not being able to see him made it even more difficult, at least the nurses took some photos of him for me and sent them to the ward I was in.

If you are the mother of a newborn you really do not have a choice. If you are and you have a cold do not kiss your baby and wash your hands alot!!If it is anyone else with a cold and not their baby I would highly suggest them not get close to the baby.Adults can also have RSV with is a very bad respiratory virus that comes across as a bad cold so be aware of that as well.

As a mother you still need to be capable of giving your newborn the attention he/she needs. Just use common sense when you are in contact with your baby

Do you mean, is it ok for a sick mom to be around someone else's newborn? I would say no way.... newborns are very prone to getting sick and it affects them alot worse than adults. I wouldn't go near someone's baby if I knew I was sick. If it's the mom's own child, then you can't help taking care of your kids while you're sick, that happens.

You are the mother so it is kinda hard to not be around. I would wear a mask or scarf tied around your nose and mouth and make sure your hands are clean before you handle the baby. If you are breastfeeding, the baby has a natural immunity and is not likely to get sick if you take precautions.

If you breastfeed your baby then don't worry. If not then your baby will probably catch your cold. This is why breastfeeding is so important.

It is okay for the mother to be around her own baby, especially if she is breastfeeding, but I would stay away from other babies.
