This goes back a long way to where people were afraid of being poisoined. they would pour some of their beverage into everyone else;s cup (diluting the poisoin) Now they just clink the flasses together.

That originally started when drinking vessels were much strudier. Originally it was done so that some of the drink fron each others mugs would splash into the other persons mug. This was to descourage attempts to poison someone through drink. If you knew that some of the poison drink might get into your own glass, you would be less likely to poision someone else's. It later evolved into classical glass klink we are familiar with now.

There are a lot of myths as to why we clink glasses when we toast.
Here's the scoop:

The notion of the "toast" arose from the practice of people pouring part of the contents of each of their glasses back and forth to assure that there was no poison in any of the cups.
