I am working on my resume to find a summer job and to send to law school. Have you had good experience with certain phrases? or a certain style? If you were hiring what would you look for?

There are several different styles of resume - it depends on the use. Make sure your resume is clear, uncluttered and easy to understand.

For the job, make sure you highlight your skills as they relate to the position you're seeking. For example, if you want to work in an office talk about the software you know, your typing skills, good communications skills, familiarity with office equipment.

Also, take a look at Monster.com or a similar job site. They all offer solid, practical resume advice complete with sample resumes and cover letters.

I've been a hiring manager for many years and there are four things that I look for most in temporary employees: good attendance, punctuality, good attitude, and intiative (e.g. a self-starter).

Many summer jobs are entry level jobs, frequently in retail or customer service, where if someone doesn't show up, I have to find someone else to fill in. This is why attendance and punctuality are important. A good attitude is also important because these positions will frequently be in contact with others, both fellow employees and customers. A good attitude means I don't have to spend as much time supervising you. Initiative - being a self starter - also reduces the time I have to spend on direct supervision.

Convince me in your resume that you possess these four traits, preferably with specific examples from prior jobs or life experiences, and you'll greatly increase your chance of getting an interview. The link below gives more specific advice about how to sell yourself in your resume.

Good luck in your job search.

If I were hiring, I would look at your age, education, skills, what languages can you speak and any trouble with the law.
Resume's are categorized, so you would want to be concise and pertinent. Use intelligent words, words that mean what you are writing about. As a plain example don't use the word contractor without specifying what kind, electrical, builder, etc.
It is important to know and what you want as a livelihood. A prospective employer will not hire an individual that has had several jobs in a short period of time.

There are no magic words or layouts that will get you a job. Be honest, positive, and proofread like crazy. Spelling or gramatical errors can trip you up.
