Ok, so my mom and i were having a discussion about the 60's. She said that although she used to consider herself a hippie, she never got stoned. She says that is what you would refer to someone high. I told her that you refer to a drunk person as stoned. Who is right?

Stoned means high, which means that she's right. A drunk person is simply drunk, not stoned. A word to describe either drunk or high, could be wasted, but stoned only means high.

You're both right. But definitely in the 60s, if you were stoned you definitely did NOT drink any alcohol. And as Bob Dylan used to sing, "Well I would not feel so all alone, everybody must get stoned." But it was a drinking term before it became a stoner term. A stoner, by the way, gets high, not drunk. Stoned is traditionally used to refer to a drug high, while drunk is for alcohol.

A drunk person can act stoned, but usually you'd call someone stoned after they got high off pot or something. Stoned is like when you're so out of it from smoking pot. Like, after the giggly stage, there's that part where the person is like dead or zoned out looking. That's when they're stoned.

Stoned normally refers to smoking pot, but I've heard it referred to as getting stoned drunk. Either way your mind is gone.
