Since the tiles are 8-inches square and the room is 8 inches wide ( are you sure it is not 8 feet wide?) the all you have to do is compute how many 8 inches are in 12 feet.

12 feet / (8inches/12 inches per foot)

144/8 = 18 tiles.

If the room is really 12 ft x 8 ft. The total area is
96 square feet.
Each 8-inch tile is (8/12)^2 =0.444 square feet

Divide 96 square feet by 0.444 square feet,

and you get 216 tiles

Do you really mean 8" wide? if so, 12'=144"
144"/8"/tile=18 tiles. If you meant 12' by 12' then
144"*96"= 13824 in^2
each tile is 8"*8"=64 in^2
13824 in^2/64 in^2/tile=216 tiles

The area of the floor is 144 inches (I assume you have it typed correct) * 8 inches = 1152 square inches.

An 8 inch tile is 64 square inches.

1152/64 = 18 tiles

Your measurements are off, no floor is 12 feet by 8 inches wide as your question says.
