I was thinking about going into real estate and saw that a background check is mandatory for getting a real estate license. Will I be able to get a license if I have a marijuana charge in my history? It said that I would have to fully explain the nature of the offense, but will that preclude me? It was a probation before judgment ruling.

I'm not sure what state you are in, but most likely a minor infraction would not be held against you, especially if it was not in your recent past. Full disclosure is the best policy...even if they tell you at the DRE that they don't need certain documentation that you have....send it anyway. My friend was delayed about 6 months on a past spousal abuse charge because he was told not to send specific documentation regarding the case. (He kicked her car door when he caught her in a compromising position). He waited forEVER. Then he finally received a request for the exact documentation that he had volunteered to send to begin with!

You'll probably not be prevented from licensure with a minor possession charge. If you were caught with enough to warrant a possession with the intent to sell, don't hold your breath.

Best of luck to you!

Depends where you are. In Texas you have to fill an application that asks you about any illegal convictions. How will that impact you I have no idea, but I would think it will. Why else would they ask.
