I absolutely agree. If the asteroid hadn't hit 65 million uyears ago, humans would not be here.
As for people who insist that the bible is real because otherwise things are "bleak", well... maybe things ARE bleak? If I write a book that makes things even happier than the bible, is it automatically truth? Is bleakness a measure of validity?
In the big picture, all human accomplishment is worth the life of one flea. When all humans are dead in 1,000 years or 10,000 years, everything we did, every atom we split, every child we raised, will be meaningless.

I see life in the universe as something too complicated to be a random event. For life to exist as we know there are delicate mathematical balances that me be kept in perfect harmony. For instance the Earth must be the excact distance from the sun that it is now. If it were closer it would be like Mercury which is too hot too mantain the water that is essential to life. If we were farther away the Earth would like Mars which is too cold too sustain life. The gravitational pulls of the celestrial bodies around us, enables the to maintain a steady orbit in relationship to the sun.
The mathematical balance of theses things is too precise to be the product of random occurences.
The big bang theory, has a big whole in it, because it does not explain what set the event of creation into motion. For example the big bang poeple are clear that matter existed at the time of the bing bang , but cannot explain where that matter came from. This theory also does not explain how amino acids formed DNA at the start of life on Earth, without external an external catylist.
The whole in fact to the big bang is that it does not, factor out the existence of God, but in fact confirms the existence of.
Darwin stated the his theory of evolution would be proven through fossil records as discovered links in the evolutionary process. Today there have been milllions of exicts species discovered with nothing to indicate a line of evolutional processses.
According to Darwins own words his theory has fallen on it's face, and has proven it self to be a lie. Modern evolutionist are too stubborn to drop the matter. So to explain the inconsistencies of the fossil records the have come up with a new theory of evolution. This new evolution theory states that an animal comes into existence with no previous ancestors, then it stays the same for thousands of years, then with out warning it becomes a totally different animal all together. This new theory actually seems like something out of the dark ages, and requires a belief in magic, in order to accept it.
The existence of a divine architect actually fills in all the gaps of the Big Bang theory and the theory of evolution.

I think that if you read some of Michio Kakku's recent writings on the M-string theory you may have a better grasp on the possible insignificance of the creation of a universe. I would specifically look in to the sections where he classifies civilizations, and is talking about his theory of bubbles. He really goes into depth on these topics in his book "Hyperspace", and it is a pretty good read.

I believe the Bible tells us exactly the answer to this question. Any other source leaves one with a very bleak outlook.
God created us in His image. That will boost your self-esteem right there! His plan is for us to live forever with Him in glory. All we have to do is accept His offer of salvation through faih in His Son Jesus.
