i have no idea, but i think it looks really stupid. to my knowledge the only people who wear clothes like that are people who think they're really cool, but they're not.

I wear ripped jeans, and I think it's cute.

To me, it just looks more casual and comfortable, especially for the summer time when I'm wearing a halter or tank. I want to compliment the summery top with something that is also summery and has air ventilation for the bottom..so ripped jeans are useful for those purposes.

Ofcourse, there are tastefully ripped jeans, and others that are simply...not. Some jeans get so ripped that they are no longer appealing. I think it just depends on the pair of jeans and where the rips are, not to mention how big they are too!

I somewhat follow high end couture fashion, and it doesn't seem to have come from that. I think it started at stores like Abercrombie and Hollister that decided to sell them, and teens buy them up just because they are A&F or Hollister brand. It seems to go along with the trend of worn-looking T-shirts with random fake things on them (Hollister Surfing Academy, Chicago High School Phys. Ed., etc).

It may ultimately be trying to copy the thrift-store look. Some hipsters buy clothes from thrift stores, and these old-looking clothes emulate that look, but are commercialized and sold at mall chain stores so that masses of teens buy them.

The style is beyond the comprehension of people that have the words "hip" and "fashionable" in their vocabulary.

well... "fashion-ripped" jeans are popular among teenage girls because, especially if there are tears on the thigh, it's a way (I guess) to "subtly" show skin.
