Its length is 6 inches more than twice its width. Find the rectangle's length and width.



>> In 1996, the salary of the governor of NY was about $10,000 more than two salaries of the governor of Arkansas.the total of the two salaries was $190,000. find the 1996 salaries of each state's governor.

Perimeter = L + L + W + W [perimeter formula]
twice width = 2W
L = 6 + 2W [length is related to width... this is how]
78 = L + L + W + W [perimeter formula set = to actual perimeter]
78 = (6 + 2W) + (6 + 2W) + W + W [value of L is substituted for L]
78 = 2W + 2W + W + W + 6 + 6 [ I just put all of the like terms together]
78 = 6W + 12 [I combined W's & 6's]
-12..........- 12 [ you have to do the opposite to get the W alone]
66 = 6W
/6..../6
11 = Width
L = 6 + 2W
L = 6 + 2(11)
L = 6 + 22
L = 28
LENGTH 28 & WIDTH 11

CHECK
Perimeter = L + L + W + W
78 = 28 + 28 + 11 + 11
78 = 78

New York + Arkansas = 190000
N + A = 190,000

Substitute "10,000 + 2A" in plance of "N" in the 2nd equation

....................A ...= 60,000

Arkansas = 60,000

Use the Arkansas salary in the original NY equation:
New York = 10,000 + two X Arkansas
N = 10,000 + 2A
N = 10,000 + 2(60,000)
N = 10,000 + 120,000
N = 130,000
New York = 130,000

CHECK:
Arkansas = 60,000
New York = 130,000
N + A = 190,000
60000 + 130000 = 190000
........... 190,000 = 190000

for the first one 78 inches divide with 6 inches. The answer times with 12. You will get the answer.



For the second answer, 190,000 - 10,000 and then the answer divided by the number of state governor you have ( that might be the amount of states times with 2) and than you plus with 10,000 and divide with all the states governor.

learn how i did this, it'l help a lot. Its important for you to learn and be able to do your own work, especially math like this. It'l get a lot harder and if you don't know algebra it'l make it all the harder.
