It depends entirely on the game. NES, Genesis and Turbo graphics games will work by turning the wii remote sideways and playing it like it was a controller. SNES and N64 games will either need a Gamecube controller or the classic controller extra for the wii.

No. The NES and Turbo Graphics games you can play with your Wii-mote. The SNES, Sega Genesis, and N64 games are compatible with a GameCube controller.

to answer our question you can use the gamecube controller to play all the classic games that you buy on the shop channel. Check on the wii site go to software then scroll down and find virtual console games.
