Legals are definitely not free, and are actually a newspaper's bread-and-butter for when it comes to income.

I'd be surprised if there are any papers that will let you advertise for free, since that is the main source of their revenue. Subscriptions and copy sales make up a much smaller amount, which is one reason why free papers are becoming more prevelant.

You might want to try Craig's List, instead.

It depends on the newspaper. The one in my town will put in lost and found and items for sale under $50 for three days for free. I think legals too
