Building a snow cave is a quick and easy way to obtain some shelter but this isn't always the best option. If the weather is calm and the air temperature is greater than the temperature of the snow pack then you're better spending the night out in the open (it will be warmer). If there's any trees or bushes in the vicinity you can build a fire, not only will it keep you warm but it will provide light and be a great psychological boost. You'll often find that underneath trees with thick foliage there's little or no snow - this will provide a dry and soft place to spend the night.

If you want to know more about snow caves and how to build them have a look at my Yahoo Blog - I've only written one thing in it and it's about snow caves... http://360.yahoo.com/profile-k3L6SNwlcaRXoTP3xKg-

First, you will want to build a snow cave, relatively easy even without supplies. If you go to the base of a tree with a good skirt, you can use that to assist you by piling snow up and then making a hole big enough for you. If you are wet, that is almost the kiss of death, so you will need to take those socks off and put something else around your feet. Hands and feet get frost bite first.

Dig a snow cave with and sleep higher than the entrance on a ledge or bunk. That is if the snow is deep enough, otherwise under an evergreen tree with low branches like a cedar or white pine. Obviously this would depend on what elevation you're talking about. After securing shelter, seek out dry tinder to build a fire.
