1. Find the slope -3x + 8y = 24 Can someone help? and
2. Write the equation of the line that passes through point (2, 11) with a slope of 9.
Will someone take the time to explain to me how to do these, pleaseeeeeeee. Thanks so much. -TinaIndie

solve the equation so that y is alone

-3x + 8y = 24
+3x..............+3x
8y = 3x + 24
/8...../8..../8
y = (3/8)x + 3

Use slope formula y = mx + b
m=slope
b = y-intercept

y = mx + b
y = (3/8)x + 3
(3/8) = slope
+3 = y-intercept

slope is written as ris/run... that means how far up/how far over
this case, you start at +3 on the y-axis (vertical line) then you go UP 3 and OVER (right) 8 to plot your next point. Draw a line connecting the two points.

Go tot teh site below and print some grid paper.

Draw in yout x & y axis & label your grids.
PLOT (2, 11)
Two negatives = a positive, right?
Your slope is 9/1 which is the same as -9/-1, so from (2, 11) go DOWN 9 and LEFT 9.
Do this as often as it takes to get your line to cross the y-axis

You will see where it crosses the y axis (-7)

Your equation is y = mx + b : m is slope & b is y-intercept (where line crosses the y--vertical--axis--line)
y = mx + b
y = 9x + b
y = 9x + -7
y = 9x -7

the coefficient next to x is always the slope
first you must restate your question in the general line equation. which is : y=mx+b
so... -3x+8y=24
-3x -3x
8y=24-3x
/8 /8
then you end up with y=3-3/8x
for the second one....
this is the general equation
y - y 1 = m(x - x 1 )
plug in and solve

#1. slope = 3/8
#2. y=9x-7

ok so for #1 you need to put everything in terms of y (meaning get y alone on one side of the = sign)

-3x+8y=24
8y=3x+24
y=3/8 x+ 3

the slope is the one in front of the x.

for #2 you need to put those numbers into this equation: y-y1=m(x-x1)
so it goes:
y-11=9(x-2)
y-11=9x-18
y=9x-7

slope-intercept formula is: y=mx +b where m=slope and b=y-intercept
for number one we add 3x to each side
8y=3x+24
then we divide each side by 8
y=3/8 x +3
our slope then is 3/8

for number two: remembering our formula y=mx+b we can put in our slope for m
y=9x+b
then we can put in our point (x, y) for x and y
11=9(2) +b
11=18+b
we now subtract 18 from both sides to find our b or y-intercept
-7=b
so our formula is:
y=9x-7
