The Anita Blake series by Laurell Hamilton starts out strong. The main character raises the dead for a living; on the side she helps a paranormal investigative team and she's a certified vampire executioner. She also gets mixed up with an Alpha werewolf and the Master of the City. The first books in the series I didn't want to put down.
Sherrilyn Kenyon writes the Dark Hunter series. These are immortals without souls sent to protect humans from Daimons (vampires) and other predators. Most of the stories take place in New Orleans and the surrounding area. I've really enjoyed these so far - they're a bit "softer" than Laurell Hamilton's.
There's a series of "Undead" mysteries by Mary Janice Davidson. This is a short summary by a reviewer on Amazon for Undead and Unwed:
Elizabeth "Betsy" Taylor is a fashion (especially shoe) obsessed former model; she got laid off from her thankless secretarial job and then is hit by a car and killed - all on her birthday! She wakes in a funeral home and figures out she's not alive but not dead either. When her attempts to finish herself off fail, and a thirst for blood (eeww!) asserts itself, she has to face it - she's a vampire! Reviewer: baltimore0502 "Hon!" (BALTIMORE, MD USA)
Charlaine Harris writes Southern Vampire Mysteries. Here's a description from Book 7, coming out in May from the Amazon site:
Louisiana cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse has her hands full dealing with every sort of undead and paranormal creature imaginable. After being betrayed by her longtime vampire love, Sookie is dealing with a new man in her life-the shapeshifter Quinn-and the long-planned vampire summit. The vampire queen of Louisiana's power base was weakened by hurricane damage to New Orleans. Some vamps want to finish what nature started. Sookie must decide what side she'll stand with.
And here's the great part about using Amazon for a search: you can see what other people view and/or buy, which gives you similar items to check out. That's what the link is about below. Sorry if I got too carried away...

Laurell K. Hamilton's books are incredible--vampires, werecritters and all the romance and conflict you could hope for and then some. The series starts a little slow, but trust me, by the third or fourth book you'll be hooked.
Kim Harrison's books are good, and I just started a new set by Patricia Briggs. Only two in that series, though, so I am witholding judgment.

from a hard core vampire lit addict, the ultimate in cont. lit Anne Rice's "Interview with a Vampire", although you will have this recommended , it's the best novel in 20 years about vampires. For a really cool anthology of " cont. "short stories -emphasis 1930-1950's try to find "Vampires: Two Centuries of Great Vampire Stories" edited by Alan Ryan c. 1987, Doubleday & Doubleday. Try Amazon. Good Luck the subject/genre is just too compelling.

Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles are definitely good...start with Interview With a Vampire and go from there. I will say though that I quit reading her books a while ago...they just got too 'flowery' for me...just like Stephen King, her earlier works are better.

the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series is fantastic. There is a lot of sex in the later books, but the story is awesome too.
They take place in Saint Louis, Missouri, and they really humanize the vampires, unlike Anne Rice, who is great in her own way.

The Necroscope Series by Brian Lumley. All the topics you just mentioned. A little slow to start but, worth the effort of reading.
