Last month I switched from Ortho Tricyclen to generic. I have already completed a pack of the generic and just finished my period yesterday afternoon. I heard that there may be more side effects with the generic and I had more cramping this month but nothing horrible and my period was even lighter than before and started on time, etc. Anyway, today I am sooo tired and cranky, I am dizzy & light headed. Are these side effects from the birth control (b/c I took my first pill of the 2nd generic pack last night)? I didn't feel this way last month when I first started the generic pack so I was just wondering if it could be from the pills or if I was just getting sick or something. As in could I have these side effects from it this month and not last? Thanks.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

· swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet; or
· symptoms of depression (sleep problems, weakness, mood changes).
• Continue using the medication and talk to your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects:
· mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps;
· breast pain, tenderness, or swelling;
· freckles or darkening of facial skin;
· increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair;
· changes in weight or appetite;
· problems with contact lenses;

Some of the side effects produced by birth control pills include the following:

Weight gain or water retention
It is obvious that the body not only may submit to the intended effects of the artificial hormones but may also undergo further changes. In this case, the body does not release or excrete excess water in the body and this is what causes one to apparently gain weight.

Menstruation problems
Another side effect of consuming the pill is that the menses may not be able to adjust. Based on a woman’s body chemistry this could be understood more deeply.

However, on the surface one may assert that it is because of the direct action of hormones on the uterus and surrounding parts that causes a change in the menstrual cycle. Though most women manage to adjust to the changes that occur, it is possible that some may experience problems.

Blood clotting
Blood clots have also been known to occur especially in women who smoke. Clotting is not common in women who do not smoke and are under the age of 35.

Other side effects of birth control pills include:
Darkened spots of the skin
Nausea
Headaches
Dizziness
These are caused by the alteration of hormone level in the blood, also accompanied by mood changes. This is because of the fact that one’s hormone level directly influence the way that one feels.

In view of all the side effects that are known to take place with use of birth control pills, it can be asserted that during the course of the first three months or so they diminish. This is because the body gradually learns to conform to the new hormonal levels.

When one experiences side effects it is advised to consult a doctor. In some cases, the doctor will prescribe another brand of birth control pills.

Aside from the side effects that cause women severe trouble in some cases, there are also reactions to the pills that make one’s body functions a little easier.

Definitely sounds like side effects. I'd be willing to bet you need a different pill.

Did you go out in the sun?
Was it hotter today than last month?
Tricyclen side effects --- sun sensitivity, and sensitivity to heat.
That would cause you to get dizzy.

i was on a "cyclen" type of antibiotic, and i had to avoid the sun, tanning booths, and i was dizzy when in the heat.

The tri means 3 ingredients.
the "cyclen" is an antibiotic they have added to many birth controls........it is used for skin problems and acne.

So, call the 24 hour pharmacy.
See if you were in the sun or tanned today, and you may just be sensitive to the "cyclen" in the b/c.

hope it's not the flu.

if you were in the sun, and it was hot, it's the b/c!

yeah, i've heard of things like those. my gyn said that it really takes about three months for the body to get used to new birth control meds. I would definetley have a conversation with my doctor asap because there are many bad side effects.

This may just be a side effect of switching meds, not necessarily because of the generic, but the switch. That's what I think it is atleast, the meds haven't been in you long enough to do your body harm, but the other has been out long enough to take a little toll on your body, does that make sense?

First read the package insert that came with your generic pills. It should list all side effects. If you had no side effects with the name brand pill, the likelihood of having them with the generic brand is slim. If you continue feeling dizzy or lightheaded, you should contact your GYN.

It sounds like you might have the touch of the flu. If you're not feeling better in a day or two contact your doctor. Generic drugs have been proven to be just effective and safe as name brand drugs.

I dont think those would be normal side affects. I have the generic brand too and have been taking them almost a year now and have never had anything like that. Maybe your getting sick like you said. Hope this helps.
