It's a movie or TV show that doesn't have high expectations when released, but that eventually become hugely popular. A good example is Office Space or There's Something About Mary.

Platoon was a sleeper. When it came out, both the distributor and the initial critics thought it was a powerful movie, but with a limited audience. It was so powerful, the word of mouth spread until two or three weeks after it's release, it became huge. Nowadays, movies are immediately judged on the first weekend. If it's not big, the film company will pull its ad money so as not to throw good money after bad. Another example of the word of mouth effect- My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

A movie is considered to be a sleeper if it isn't
very popular when it first comes out, but gains
popularity through word of mouth, through teaching,
critics etc - AFTER its first run in the major
theaters.
There are some movies that aren't consider
masterpieces until years - decades - after they
were originally produced.

It means it wasn't expected to do well like Star Wars. But word of mouth made it a hit.
