Well, if you're want a current event, try the War in Iraq. It's certainly a controversial issue and there is way more to it then simply being for it or against it.

Choose something that is not black and white--say the controversy around illegal immigration for example. People flee other countries for survival such as jobs and more money to feed their families. Legal immigration can sometimes take years as our govt. has not been real good about giving a yes/no answer to immigrants about whether or not they can come to the U.S. People have trouble waiting years for a decision at times. US Immigration law needs reformed before progress can be made. Some people feel that giving aid to other countries to help them create jobs in their own countries would also help this situation. Making friends is always better than making other countries angry and wanting to be confrontational. This is indeed a controversial, non-simple subject that can't be adequately addressed in this short space. This was just to serve as an example. You can probably think of other controversial topics as well.

Discuss both sides of the issue and give the common arguments people use. Then, point out that the solution may not be a simple one as many things need addressed before an adequate solution could be made. Offer possible avenues that need explored. Leave the final decision up to your reader. Provide a conclusion.

I did this paper on therapeutic cloning, my professor loved the topic and i got an A. Here are a few other topics:
- should violent "distrubed" students be permitted to attend public schools?
-nuclear power: revival or relapse
-should nonalcoholic beer be sold to minors
-should children under 16 be sentenced as adults
-should procedures @ fertility clinics be changed to decrease the likelihood of multiple births with more than 3 babies
-should sex ed begin in kindergarten
-do we need stronger cybercrime laws
-should in-vitro fertilization be banned
-should a "shoot the buglar" law be enacted
-should perpetrators collect damages for injuries incurred during a crime
-should cross-species cloning be banned

depending where you go to school the library would have access to databases such as Infotrac, proquest, and ebscoHost. These were the only resources my professor wanted us to use, they are the most reliable. I hope i helped and didn't give you too much information. Good Luck!!!

Select a controversial topic and then do a quick check on-line and/or in the library to see if there is adequate, understandable (i.e. not written at a highly technical level) information to put in a paper. You might check a few days of a major daily newspaper to see what controversial issues are currently being discussed. For example, my son did a paper on bio-technology with an emphasis on bio-engineered foods. Also, currently there seems to be a controversy about the new shot to prevent cervical cancer--some states are making it mandatory for young girls. Once you have decided on a topic and determined that there is adequate information available, then check with your instructor to get the topic approved.

Do a spy thriller! Serious.

Discuss the hypothetical ramifications of what will or could happen to Geo. W. Bush and/or VP Cheney when they leave office. There's gotta be a lot of intrigue there. Wow!! These two are being constantly vilified now. Some people are gonna want their 'pound of flesh', of course without the 'drop of blood' scenario(Shakespeare - Merchant of Venice). They will be ordinary citizens(except for the 'agents').

an issue that suggests more than a simple pro and con method generally means that ethics are involved. to approach this assignment, i would google ethical questions. some ethical questions may include: cloning, abortion, assisted suicide, experimentation on animals, embryonic stem cell research, etc.

You've received some great ideas, and I want to add one tip: Pick a topic that interests you, but NOT one you care passionately about. You don't want to be bored researching something you really have no interest in, but you may find it hard to represent an opposing viewpoint on something you care deeply about.

A great topic would be abortion, stem cell reaserch, or gay marriage. Stem cell reaserch is the most interesting though!
