if your neck doesn't break probably
the purpose of hanging is to break the neck, not strangle the victim, that's why they knock the floor out from under you
a "long drop and a short stop" as they say
hanging can be used for strangling yes, but breaking the neck is much more effecient

Assuming the neck didnt snap, i imagine it would only take about 5 mins or so. You would pass out after 2 probably, and one could likely be resuscitated to life again if it was done within a few minutes. As far as the pain goes, i think suffocating is among the worse ways to go out. I think overdosing on sleeping pills is probably the best way to do it if pain is a consideration.
PS, generally hung corpses **** themselves sometime after death before rigor mortis sets in. For the sake of dignity it's better to do this after the morning constitutional- not that i'm endorsing suicide.

Done "properly" it is quick and painless because the hangee dies from a neck fracture and the severing of the spinal cord. If, however, the neck does not break due to an insufficient drop or an incorrect knot then yes it can take excruciating minutes to pass out and then after a few more minutes to actually die.

it depends on how quickly the pressure is applied and where abouts round the neck the rope is. If the rope is high on the neck a lot of pressure could be taken on the jaw and people have been like that for over 12 minutes and survived. If the rope is putting all the pressure on the windpipe and neck artery, unconcious in about 30 seconds and dead in 2 minutes. It also depends on a persons weight as to how much pressure there will be.

It is one of the worst ways to die. It's a form of torture. It will be very painful and it will not be quick.

I had a brother who hung himself in jail while he was on suicide watch (yeah, we sued and won). The doctors tell us that he hung for at least 5 minutes without air. It probably took him about 2 minutes to pass out. They did CPR on him and brought him part of the way back. For a while, he could hear us and understand us-then the seizures took his understanding and he could just hear us. 9 months later after being a "vegetable" and having his mom and me clean his diapers, he died of pneumonia. He was 37 and it was a great loss. How long does it take-for him it was 9 months. If no one finds you will be brain dead in 7 minutes.

It probably is, of course. I mean your being choked, ur gonna die, i'd think it's painful and torturous. Your life may be flashing before your eyes. Why do you ask? Wait, what kind of stupid question is this?!

My bro hung himself and was without oxygen for for 12 mins he was clinically dead. They had to massage his heart but he lived. That was 15 years ago but I asked him in detail how it was. If he remembered dying,if it hurt etc...and he told me that truthfully after about 30 secs he was out cold and doesn't remember anything for about 3 weeks. So I guess its not as painful as everybody makes it out to be.
