"Random Acts of Senseless Violence" by Jack Womack.
It is about a girl and her family and friends in a near-future time, and the girl's descent into "random senselessness." It is very well done. Unlike "Lord of the Flies," though, it shows the entire social order breaking down, not just a few children.

Stand by Me was a similar story. It was also a hit movie.

Life of Pi was a good book, about a boy who becomes stranded on a desert island. It was also a true story, always worth reading.
