The greenhouse effect is caused by various compounds in the air (including water vapor and carbon dioxide) that absorb infrared radiation emanating from the earth after solar rays hit the surface (they lose energy when they hit and come off at lower energy, which usually comes off as infrared). If there were no infrared-absorbing compounds in the atmosphere, the average temperature on the Earth's surface would be about -60 degrees Fahrenheit, even though 99% of the Earth's atmosphere does not absorb infrared radiation (the three major components, N2, O2, and Ar are molecules which do not have dipole moments and cannot absorb infrared radiation).
As such, the greenhouse effect allows Earth to be warmer on average than it would normally, given the distance from the Sun, etc. The problem lies in the increase in carbon dioxide due to the burning of fossil fuels, etc. and the decrease in plant life which cannot help to convert the CO2 into O2 via photosynthesis. Increased CO2 in the atmosphere leads to excess heat being trapped, and global temperatures on average rising. It is not known completely what will happen with higher temperatures, but it's assumed that the weather patterns can change, causing extremes in certain areas (droughts in some areas, flooding in others) and increased melting of the polar ice caps, leading to rising ocean levels and flooding of low-lying areas. It can also lead to decreased plant growth and decreased food supply.

The greenhouse effect is cause by clouds keep the heat that the sun produces in earth, causing a greenhouse effect. This in turn causes the earth to become warmer and warmer. Some may call the conditions hostile. The heat may confine you to your home until the weather is better suited for being outside, I guess that's one way that it affects weather and living things.

hello, when some kind of gases like co, methane etc increase they trap the solar energy and retain the heat on earth, to an extent it is very useful for us as if it were not there in the nighttimes we would have died of extremely low temperatures. but anything of too muchis bad, and this applies to greenhouse effect also. if it increases it increase the temperature more than required which is quite dangerous for us, as the temperature rise by it( though less) might cause the polarice caps to melt and thus we might get flash floods, which might thus cause many disastrous consequences on living beings as it disturbs the complete ecosystem in many ways and from many sides.
