No, I had not heard of it before.

The Potato River in Wisconsin is a primary tributary of the Bad River. I could not find other information on it, including origin of the name. You might contact a historical society in the area, often they can give you this kind of information.

Maybe it is named that because of it's location. Does it run through Idaho?
