Infrared waves are electromagnetic waves that are just below red on the electromagnetic spectrum, hence the prefix "infra." Humans can only see a small part of the spectrum, from red to violet. Hot objects emit infrared waves. A certain type of night vision apparatus can detect infrared waves, so it can identify objects warmer than their surroundings.
