A number of reasons come to mind Upbringing, school associates, gangs, which leads to drugs, robbery and sometime murder. Prison leads them in new directions meeting other criminals that they learn from. Getting out they move back to the "old neighborhood" then they can't get a job because they are an ex con. Can't afford to eat so back to crime.
