Neither, both HP and Sony laptops stink most of the time. I'd say go with Acer or Toshiba.

I just bought the dv6226us and have had it for about two weeks. So far, so good, though I just ordered 2gb of corsair ram to make it even faster. Not that it isn't fast already, but according to the ram gauges, 50% of ram capacity is being used when vista is idle. A little side note, the dv6226 I believe is 849.99 before the $150 rebates at Circuit City. I ordered mine from Comp USA (which had $200 in rebates) and got a price match, which landed me the dv6226us for $650 before tax.

I also have the Sony vgn-s360, which was my previous laptop. The thing was a beast. However, the Sony went through a number of problems prompting my switch. The biggest thing was that the ati graphics card crapped out on me, allowing me to only run windows in safe mode using 640x480 mode. Another thing is that the lcd formed patches of light, where some areas were lighter than others. Also, when I upgraded the ram, one of the screw heads fell out, and the panel covering my pcmcia slot fell off as well. All this occurred within a year and a half of use during law school and occasional gigging (I use my laptop to dj too). However, it wasn't like I was lugging and throwing the thing around. I kept it in a protective sleeve AND stuck the thing in a padded laptop bag when traveling.

Long story short, I don't trust Sony primarily because of build quality. The HP seems a lot sturdier, minus the keyboard which does seem a little cheap. But you can always get a keyboard cover anyway. I just looked up the specs of the sony you just mentioned, which has a faster processor than the hp. However, its also about $300 more which I don't think is worth it. You could easily purchase 2gbs of corsair value select for $150, put it in the hp, and have a faster laptop than the sony at $100 less (with the rebates included).

You should get Apple's Macbook instead, though it's pretty expensive.
