I see Canas bear Federer in the first round at the Pacific Life tournament, and now holds a 2-1 lifetime advantage against the great Swiss. But why was Canas out of tennis for 18 months? What did he get suspended for?

In the tournament of Acapulco, mexico, last year he had the flu and asked for the doctor of the tournament to give him medication. Apparently, the doctor gave him an antibiotic made in mexico that contained an ingredient banned by the ATP. He was therefore convicted of failing a doping test and given a unique 2 years suspension, extremely exagerated because he had never been convicted before and he could prove that the mistake was not his but made by a doctor who was working directly for the ATP.

The problem was that the doctor at first didn't want to tell the ATP that he had made a mistake and the page of his medical report where he had to write down what he gave to Canas was ripped off!

Finally, Canas won the appeal and had to serve only 15 months out of the original 24. The doctor was deemed responsible of comitting a medical error but Canas had to start over form scratch, playing in september of last year for the first time in challengers

In less than 6 months, he has already won 4 tournaments, he'll be entering the top 50 next week and yesterday he cut Federer's undefeated run. It goes to show that he's not a "drug cheat" because he doesn't need that to be one of the best players in the world. He was number 8 in the ranking when he was suspended. You'll see that before the end of the year he'll be a top 10 player again.

Argentina has 12 players in the top 100, 4 of them were suspended for doping (Coria, Canas, Puerta and Chela). However, all of them were actually better AFTER the suspension than before (Coria and Puerta reached the final of Roland Garros after their suspension and Chela had never won a tournament when it happened to him). This is the proof that they don't need to use those kind of products to succeed. The problem is that the ATP is harder on them than on any other nationality (2 russian players and an american player were convicted of using steroids last year and only got a 3 months suspension, compare that to what Canas got) because Argentina is not a rich country and they don't have any representative member sitting in the ATP comittee to vouch for them and make sure that they are not treated unfairly. So the ATP ends up using argentinian players as scapegoats in their crusade against doping.

he's a drug cheat, that's why. he took performance enhancing drugs. of course so he can get back into the game quicker, he made up some lame lie. Canas tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) at a tournament in Mexico. diuretic is science talk for a blanketing drug, that prevents you seeing what other drugs like steroids are in the body when you do a drug test. He says that he was delivered the wrong medication...boohoo, he should have checked the label before he ingested the drugs, if indeed that was the case, which there is no proof of. and if he did take steroids as well with the aid of his blanketing drug, they will still be in his body for at least two years. unfair. anyway he went and put on a big cry for the court of sport arbitration and they reduced his ban from 2 years to 15 months.disgusting. drug cheats should never be allowed back. Argentines have a history of being drug cheats, guillermo coria, juan ignacio chela, mariano puerta, mariano hood.

He git suspended for a diuretic (doping, steroids) actually he had his suspension reduced 9 months from 2 years to 15 months. That is one thing the ATP does right if you mess around see Peter Korda they put you on the shelf for a long time. They test all the time also.
