I've been having a buffalo nickel since I can't even remember but everytime I look at it I can't make out if it says 1825 or 1925. So when were they first distributed so maybe I have an idea of what year it is.

The first Buffalo Nickel released in 1913. It was designed by James E. Fraser, whose initial “F” appears beneath the date. More than anything, the coin’s “Wild West” designs of a Native American and buffalo made it an instant success.

There were also two distinct versions of this classic American coin — the first showing the bison on a raised mound, the second with the base designed as a straight line. The raised mound is far more scarce.
