Darkdrag- that is an awful lot of typing for a pretty crappy answer. The last team that won the cup LOL. I don't think teams like Carolina or TB were the most popular...ahhh....ever.
It is either the Maple Leafs or the Habs BUT this is a trick question if the formula is Lovers-haters because almost every fan in Canada that loves the Habs, hates the Leafs and vice versa. Therefore they would be rated close to zero with each of the likers cancelling out the haters.
Probably (based on what you asked), I would say the Oilers/Red Wings (you did say North America) because they have alot of fans around the globe but not a whole lot of haters.
I know this is probably not what you intended as your question but sometimes my enormous IQ (lol) gets the best of me.

The Detroit Red Wings are a team that is loved on both sides of the border. Everybody laughs at the New York Rangers over here in Canada because of their high payroll in the past couple with the fact that they missed the playoffs seven (7!) years in a row with that sky-rocketing type of payroll! Coloado also has a pretty good throng of fans on both sides of the border. Leaf fans only exist in Canada, as do only Habs fans. So, although I have mentioned that both Colorado and Detroit have strong followings on both sides of the border, I give the edge to Detroit because of their longevity and recent history of success over Colorado.

Come on guys, everyone knows it has to be one of the original six. Doesn't the term Boston Bruins ring a bell to anyone? Honestly it's probably the Montreal Canadiens.
