Has anyone figured out how to circumvent this yet? Every thread I've seen is somewhere between 1-4 years old, none have a viable solution, just a couple of quick/dirty workarounds for specific applications, none of which serve my purpose (if you need to know this, ask and I'll explain).

Actually, client-side I'm running rdesktop on Ubuntu, but that's irrelevant - I want remote sound (server side), not local (client side). when doing so, the sound loads, so some sound works (system sounds), but the configuration of Microsoft RDP Audio Drivers prevents playing any kind of media aside system sounds.
I had this working, but as soon as I disconnected and reconnected, RDP was loaded/installed, and I'm trying to figure out how to do that.

Upon rereading your answer, Tracy, I realized my question was a tad incoherent, and the additional details provide for potentially more confusion. I'm wanting my windows server to allow clients to actually use the installed audio drivers, instead of the above named emulator driver that automatically installed after ending my first RD session. The closest I've come to a solution so far is getting winamp's audio to work if I start it playing from the server before connecting through rdesktop, but I'm wanting to be able to start programs at will here, instead of constantly running four different media players.
