If you live on the Pacific coast of continental US or Canada, you are normally on Pacific Standard time (UT - 8).

As of this morning (Sunday March 11) you are on Pacific Daylight Saving Time (UT - 7)

---
The Earth spins one full turn in 24 hours. 360 degrees in one day is a rate of 15 degrees per hour.

Originally, each time zone was 15 degrees wide, with the centre of each zone at longitudes divisible by 15.

For example, GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) would go from 7.5 E to 7.5 W. GMT has been "replaced" by UT (Universal Time). It is basically the same time (ecept that they use the average time of many positions instead of the line that goes through the old telescope at Greenwich, near London.)

Longitude 120 W is the centre of the eight time zone west of Greenwich (120 / 15 = 8). That longitude goes through Sunnyside, Washington. The Time zone going from 112.5 W to 127.5 W keeps time that is offset by 8 hours from UT (except in daylight saving time, when the offset is only 7).

In Daylight Saving, the clocks are kept one hour "fast" so that everything connected to the Sun appears to happen one hour later: The Sun rises one hour later than it should, it passes due south at 1 p.m. instead of noon and it sets one hour later than it should. It is that final hour (the extra hour at night) that is the "saved daylight".
