They can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 90 seconds. It depends on how far apart they are. I went to the hospital when mine were 4 minutes apart and I live 30 miles from the hospital so......that was a rough ride!

When timing contractions, you'll want to time from the beginning of one to the beginning of another for the frequency. The duration of a contraction is timed from the beginning of the contraction to the end of the same contraction.
When they first start they tend to be 10-30 minutes apart and lasting around 30 seconds. This is the early labor, latent phase.
The second phase of contractions are 2-5 minutes apart and last around 40-60 seconds. This is your active phase.
The third phase of labor, transition, has contractions 1.5-2 minutes apart, lasting 60-90 seconds.

Actually, contractions (real ones, the ones that will dialate your cervix) are supposed to last between 60 and 90 seconds. On the machine they use to monitor contractions an actual contraction looks something like a hill next to a mountain next to a hill. Each contraction should contain this, low intensity, high intensity, low intensity. That was what they taught in my birthing class a few years back and it has been correct for all three labors I have been through.

With my first child I had no contractions until my water broke. With my second, I contracted for close to 3 weeks, and with my third child I contracted for what seemed like closer to 4 weeks. I think it is possible to have contractions well before labor begins. They are probably just Braxton Hixs. My contractions with my last two kids before true labor probably lasted anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds. Good luck to you.

I've been having contractions all day... and at first they were a couple seconds, probably about 20, and now they are closer to 30-40 seconds.

false contractions come and go like you said 10-20 seconds the real contractions last longer like a min they will come every 1-2 min and they are VERY painful if you are having false contractions then take a warm bath (not too hot) or lay down or if sitting keep switching positions this will help ease them that same if you are laying down just switch positions when the real one come you will know the are like very very bad menstrual cramps

The rule is 'do they come 5 minutes apart?' If they come and go 5 minutes apart it is time to go to the hospital. At that point, you're dialating at a rate that you are ready to have the baby soon. Early on you will have some that feel like lightening pains and come on sporadically, that is normal but not labor. Call your doctor if you are unsure.

they can last anywhere up to 30 seconds. wait and see how long till you have another one... usually they say when you have them closer together, then you could be going into labor, call when they are about 15-20 minutes apart to see with your doctor. when they are about 7-5 minutes apart then you NEED to go to the hosptial.
