Good question. I know what you mean. I think Hitler was a very evil person and the things that he did was disgusting. However, it is amazing that ONE person could influence so many people and change the face of history forever. I remember in a uni lecture once we were talking about 'charisma' and I offended a few people by saying that one of the most charismatic people was Hitler. It does not mean that I admire him at all - he did terrible things, but I do think that he was very charismatic and had amazing leadership skills.

He was a very popular political leader who brought Germany out of the depression at least 5 years early, Too bad about the war and what happened to the Jews. If he had been able to avoid the war for another year and a half he would have managed to create the Jewish homeland. His pressure on England to give the Jews Palestine was working until he made the mistake of signing a peace treaty with Russia over the division of Poland.
Signing a treaty with Stalin's communist government, what a colossal blunder.

edit: what Dr yankem says is true.

I don't necessarily think he was a great man...one of power and influence, yes. Evil people can be masked in charm and the ability to influence others.

I would not use the word Hitler and "great" in the same sentence though. Influential, maybe, but not great. The Dalai Lama...now there is the epitomy of greatness.

Drug addicts, alcoholics, wife beaters and pedophiles are all master manipulators. Germany was in near ruin after the first world war and Hitler used the fear and hatred of Germans the same way white supremacists use fear and hatred to turn problem youth into racists and gay bashers. I don't know if I would call that great.

If you want someone to look up to for positive manipulation of society, check out Mahatma Gandhi.

Not me either. He pandered to his country's worst instincts and villainized part of his population. He murdered his enemies (such as Martin Bormann). Every single territorial gain he made has since been overturned. He was certifiably insane (why else did he wage war on the Soviet Union?)

how did he manipulate his people?by the promises he made to rise to power?thats what politicians are supposed to do,listen to the people.the propoganda didnt start until later,to keep the peoples morale up.none of it is any different than the reported kill ratios in vietnam.hitler was a patriot and a military genius.

he was also a genocidal maniac but you didnt ask about that, you asked why he manipulated people.

Well... he did manage to rescue the German economy, restore national pride, turn Germany into a superpower and many Germans really did follow him, he was good at manipulating others and he could paint well...

but he also started World War II (resulting millions of deaths) and slaughtered 6 million Jews. This totally outweighs anything good he did. This is plain evil and sadistic!

well...sorry, but the words "great" and "hitler" should never be in the same sentence unless "great" is proceeded by "failure" or "psycho" or "evil being." in my opinion, he embodied evil, the devil in the flesh, and all that is dark and unholy in this world. his powers of manipulation were fueled by his deep hatred for mankind, and his love of the devil and his own advancement as a dictator to the world. that power to manipulate is not to be emulated nor admired in ANY circumstance. but that's me.
