Yep. They are. They actually do better in crash tests than some of the bigger cars. One reason is they have a steel crash cage built into the body, much like race cars, that keeps the occupants safe from "intrusion". Check out the site.

How are they not safe. They are made out of metal just like bigger cars and they have airbags and seat belts just like bigger cars.
