most of it is water. the way it works is there is a HUGE tank full of CO2, and when you push on a lever for whatever soda it switches the tank on and forces the CO2 and water to mix with syrup. The syrup being the flavor and color of whatever drink you want, if it tastes weak and looks clear, or off color there isn't enough syrup.

Because they are my friend, soda water and flavored syrup makes a fountain drink what it is.
Nothing is "going on" except pouring a soda.

At the fountain, the syrup, the water, and the CO2 are being combined at that moment. It mixes up the soda as it pours into your cup

That is the carbonated water. Fountain drinks don't come like canned or bottle cokes (premixed) They come separate, syrup and carbonated water, and mix as they come out of the fountain

because if you open the door underneath you will see a canister of ..say..coke cola syrup and the syrup is to sweet to drink straight so they mix it with carbonated water. When the syrup runs out you just get carbonated h2o.Till someone puts another canister of coke syrup underneath.or sprite, all fountain drinks come like that.

This carbonated water. it keeps the soda fresh and "fizzy" it's just like what is used in cans and bottles but you cannot see it in those because it is already mixed in.
