Is there a way to not lose positive work energy, when everyone working with this person has to babysit them, and still take care of their own responsibilites? Presently, I have to come in early to get my work done (unpaid), because there is so much babysitting detail, because of this person's inability/refusal to do her job.

Quit covering for the person. Do your own work and do it well, but don't babysit the other person. Sooner or later, the supervisor will notice what's going on.

Catwoman, (nice name!)

What you do is get all the other coworkers together and go as one to the manager and complain about this irritating coworkr. That usually does the trick.

Everyone encounters this type of coworker at some point. It seriously makes you wonder who they ever got their job in the first place and how they keep it! Of course, there may be mitigating circumstances, i.e. family member or friend of the boss, you're an off-site group and the manager isn't around much so doesn't "see" the person in their worst, ... Been there! Had that!! But if this person is really as bad as you describe than others must feel the same say. Banding together and speaking as one voice has a powerful affect on the manager. He/she is faced with the decision: do I fire the obnoxious coworker or possibly lose the rest of my department? The choice becomes obvious.

1. talk to the person and explain how their behavior impacts you. without namecalling or anger. just the facts. "when you do zero claims processing in a day, i feel i have to work late to get the claims done and my need for fairness is not met"
"when your spreadsheets aren't done, i feel frustrated, because i can't do my work unless i have them"
or whatever the situation is.
everyone in the office should talk to the person - everyone who is having the problem. try to address the issue with that person first - don't decide ahead of time it won't work if you haven't tried it in just this way.
if that doesn't help, then
tell the boss - explaining why you can't get your work done.
if that doesn't work then EVERYONE who is impacted go in together and tell the boss. If the boss still does not act, then stop babysitting and see what happens. if that doesn't work then everyone stop babysitting at the same time. toughlove.
it that doesn't work then get a different job or start your own buisness.

I would make an appointment to talk to the Boss and simply express that you have been covering for her by coming in early. Tell the Boss that you are not going to be able to come in early and that person will have to do her work.
Explain to the Boss that you wanted to warn him that the work assigned to the lazy person will most probably not get done--and you did not want it to show as a reflection on your work performance.
The Boss should get the idea!

Every office has one of these... let her continue to "NOT" do her job... just don't cover for her anymore... and encourage the rest of your coworkers to do the same... she will self destruct in no time and you can wave Buh Bye to the slacker !!
