That is a bad present to get as a gift- chameleons are very hard to take care of. Luckily, they are one of the easiest of the species. You can also look up veiled chameleons- they are the same thing. As for colors- depends on your lizard. Usually they are shades of varying green, some are green and orange, some green and yellow, etc. Some rare ones are blue and other colors. My guy was green and yellow bodied with orange marking on his head. Color will start to appear at a couple months, and increase as he gets older. Chameleons are not a typical pet- you can not hold most of them, and they get stressed out from being looked at too much. (If I looked at my chameleon too long or tried to hold him, he wouldn't eat for a day or two. I had a party once and he wouldn't eat for 2 weeks.)

Ok: first you need a mesh enclosure- small one for now as he is a baby and a large one (4 ft high and 2ft by 2ft ideal) for when he is an adult- no glass- they need ventilation and can become stressed by their reflection. In that inclosure you need a water dripping system for drinking water. Chameleons will usually not drink standing water.
You need temps in the 80s or so in the day and 70s at night. Do not allow it to become colder. Humidity needs to be at 60-70%. To achieve this, you will need to mist at least once a day and have a large plant (shelter and humidity) inside. The plant must be in organic fertilizer- the chemicals in normal potting soil will harm your chameleon.

You need a UVB/UVA light strip for artificial sunlight. Do not buy a bulb one because it is not UVB and UVA. It needs to be a flourescent strip. You also need a heat lamp if your temps to not match the temps needed by the chameleon.

www.petco.com or any other site sells stuff as well.

Food: you need to vary the diet- calcium covered crickets are a staple, as well as treats of silkworms, meal worms etc. Right now he may only eat about 7 crickets or so every other day, but an adult, they eat about 1000 crickets a month- buy online from any cricket supplier- it is about $40 cheaper than going through a pet store. Do not leave left over food in with them or the food could eat parts of the chameleon and kill it.

If your cham is not eating, try upping the humidity or heat. That usually does the trick. My cham also loves showers- you put them on a stick in the shower with warm (not hot) water and keep them out of the direct spray- the mist will rise up and that is the only time I could hold my guy- and he would show all of his colors.

Males- will have a prominant upwards facing flap. Females- it will barely come off of it's back. Females also will not really be colorful, unless they are angry or ready to mate.

Any other questions feel free to ask. I have only owned one, and recently sold him due to me moving, but the breeder that bought him said he was the largest and most colorful male she has ever seen a nonbreeder have- so I guess I am doing something right.

When captive, adults require an enclosure around 2' x 2' x 3' in size. Use full spectrum lighting 12-14 hours per day. Provide a basking area in the 90's with access to a cooler zone. Day temperature should be gradient from 78 to 85 degrees F. Maintain night temperature range between 70-75 degrees F. Enclosure should be well ventilated.

Provide several climbing areas on branches, logs, & plants. This species requires a constant high level of humidity.
Mist enclosure every 3-4 days. Provide moving or constantly dripping water supply. Has to be moving or dripping water. And no heat rocks.
