Mitsubishi Eclipse?? I want one really bad, and I am going to get one but all of my friends (who are racers) say that they break down too easily. Is it because they like cars that they can dog, and an Eclipse isn't that kind of car?? I just want one to get me from point A to point B.

You didn't say which eclipse you were interested in. You have 4 generations of eclipses. I don't care for the 3G (3rd generation 2000-2005) or the new 4G ( 2006- ). I think the 2G is the best looking eclipse but those cars are now getting older and more miles on them. They made those from 1995-1999. If you get a turbo GST or GSX you have to beware of crankwalk. The 1995 and 1996 are more likely to crankwalk then the 1997-99. Once a car gets crankwalk you have to replace the whole engine which sucks.
Most people who drive Hondas and V8s hate eclipses. Probably because quite a few eclipses beat them before. I had a bunch of people try to talk me out of buying an eclipse because they said they are just moneypits and break down all the time. So far I have been very happy with my 99 eclipse I've had for over 4 years now.

I don't think they are bad (never having an Eclipse, so not speaking from experience). But I did have a Mitsubishi when I first had my lisence and it was a pretty reliable car. The website below has a reliability table, you may want to type another model and see how it compares w the eclipse.

Maybe they are too fragile if you are going to race them and beat them up, but from point A to B type of car, anything is good (IMHO). Any car will be reliable and last a long time if you give it good maintenance, change the oil on time, etc. And they are small, meaning economical.... right now I have a chevy sylverado truck and it kills me everytime I stop at a gas station... I'll say go for it if you really like it!!!!!!!!!

Eclipses are tricky cars. If they are non turbo, they are fine. But as soon as you get one factory made turbo... you are bound to be cursed. Mitsubishi SUCKS at making cars, and honestly, don't get an Evo either. If you just want something to get you from point A to point B, and non turbo eclipse would be great for you! They look great and are fairly reliable. If you have money to spare and want a cheap car thats easy to build and easy to work on, DSMs are GREAT. However, they do break, and its simply because Mitsubishi makes their cars poorly. Yes Evo's are newer, but they had crappy drivetrains. Take it from someone who's had her fair share of Eclipses and Talons, they break constantly. and its one thing after another unless they are TOTALLY babied. And be careful, owning one gets you sucked into a trap. They are so beautiful and easy to fall in love with! As far as things to look for, the best year of eclipses is the 92. This is when they had the 6 bolt engine with a 4 bolt rear end. They didn't crank walk and they are less likely to bust an axle. anything after 92 is pretty much a failure. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the pop up headlights, but the 1gA is my favorite generation.

I own a 1G eclipse that I race. I love this car. The newer Eclipses are different, but if you are looking for a driver, they should be fine. The EVO is by far the pick of the litter (only car to beat me so far in a 1/4), but the Eclipse (DSM) is a tough car in the racing world, especially drags. I've seen 4 cylinder DSMs take down supercharged V8s (I used to be a V8 owner). Mitsubishi does make a very reliable car in the fact that they kept the design simple. Get one and enjoy it!

I agree with Mrpraka. Get an EVO to shut them up!

0-60 in 4.9, way quicker than an Eclipse. You're getting a Mitsubishi, and you get a 4 door car that handles like a Porsche for 1/3 of the price.

An Eclipse isn't bad, so long as it's 2000 or newer and well cared for. If your going to get one and use it as a daily driver, it will be ok as long as you follow a good maintenance schedule. They're easy to work on yourself (the 4-cyl model) if you're a novice. The older Eclipses need some more maintenance and repair if they're pushed to the limits. I like recent Illinois-assembled 4-cyl Mits because they're reliable and easy to maintain by myself in a driveway. I'm guessing that most of the troublesome Eclipses are owned by owners who haven;t maintained their car well because they don't understand much about it. if you do most of the work yourself if you have the space and tools, then it's a fun car to own and maintain.

if you only want a daily driver for city/interstate then the newer eclipse will do just fine. if you want performance and handaling then you want a mid-later 90s model eclipse gst.

A gst will hang with some fast imports, although the evo is the best pick of them all!!

sounds like your friends arent very intelligent racers. the eclipse is a mainstay of the racing world as is most everything that mitsubishi makes. they are very reliable and a lot of fun to drive. if you actually research mits you will find a log proud racing heritage, and a long history of well built cars. i am driving my third mits. my mom is on her third also and niether one of us will drive anyting else.

MItsubishi's are very good cars, I've been selling them for a very long time and most customers that want to trade one in have well over 100k miles and all they ever did to it was minor maintenance.

Yes, they SUCK. Slowmobiles. Some years are known to CRANKWALK(look it up). They won't survive past 120k miles. Good luck.

P.S. Your friends sound like ricers.
