I answered this before and found from Wikipedia ( so consider the source with suspicion) that there are about 18 million containers in transit on any given day.....
this is believable because just one shipper....Maersk...has over 300,000 containers working on any given day and there's as many on the roads or trains going to and from as there are actually at sea........

there are probably another 5 million taken out of shipping service and used as buildings, storage and housing.......
