I think it was Mercutio.....He fights for his friends and cousin. he's honest with Romeo, although estranged. I think Romeo is too consumed with himself. Benvoilo just wants to fight, but Mercutio is honest with Romeo and ends up dying for him.

They are both good friends to Romeo.
Mercutio is Romeo's best friend. They have fun together. They get into mischief together; Mercutio helps Romeo crash the Capulets' party. Also, Mercutio gets into a fight with Tybalt because of Tybalt's insulting Romeo. So, though they are best friends, and Mercutio means nothing but good for Romeo, his influence is not entirely good. Through Mercutio, Romeo meets Juliet, and partly because of Mercutio's hot-headed reactions, Mercutio and then Tybalt are killed.
Benvolio is older than Romeo and his cousin. He is wiser and more experienced than Mercutio. He cares about Romeo and does his best to keep him out of danger.
So, which was the better friend? It depends on how you look at it. Best friend, or best influence?

As to the answer above, Benvolio NEVER wants to fight. He is always the peacemaker, always trying to break up the fight--in Act I, Scene 1, and again in Act III.

As to which is the better friend, what an interesting question!

Is it better to have a friend who tries to keep you out of trouble (who would be Benvolio), or a friend who is always making you laugh (Mercutio)? Once you decide on the answer to that question, then you should have the answer to which is the better friend.

You should be able to find several examples either way.

If you want to read an easier version of the play, try the site "No Fear Shakespeare." There's a side-by-side version of many of Shakespeare's plays, with the original version next to a modern retelling.

Good luck with the essay. If you have time, watch one of the good video productions (1968 or 1996) to help.

Benvolio is the better friend/relative to romeo. Mercutio is an actual invited guest at the capulet party. Also he is nuts, read his queen mab speech.
