Gothenburg is Sweden's second city. It has a magnificent harbour, a brilliant showpiece boulevard, and Liseberg, one of the world's best amusement parks. Its prime attraction is Spaceport Liseberg, which dominates the park at a height of 150m (492ft).
In the summer, you can go to the nearest coastal islands. One of the best ways of exploring this area, west of the city, is to take a bike alongside the river from the Opera House, a route which takes you past the ferry terminals used by Stena Line's Denmark service. A few hundred metres straight on is Klippan, a charming old enclave of red houses that were used in the sugar and brewing industries. The wooden, red-painted East India Company warehouse is now a chic restaurant, Sjomagasinet.
Around 3km west of Klippan is Saltholmen, at the tip of Gothenburg's most westerly peninsula. There are lots of smooth rocks here, providing a multitude of hidden sunbathing areas and you can climb Saltholmen's highest point for lovely views.
From Saltholmen, regular ferries make the short trip to the most popular islands, stopping first at Branno, an island mainly given over to summer houses converted from fishermen's shacks. Styrso is the next island, with three hamlets where most of its residents live all year. The furthest of the main islands is Vrango, which has one small village and a perfect lagoon with a great beach to spend an afternoon in.
